Let me start by sharing a story with you. There is an old chum of mine who had a major academic setback some years ago, of course this really got him devastated. He was depressed for a long time, according to him, the only time he was really not thinking about his problem was in his sleep. Days after days he got unhappier, that even when he closes his eyes to sleep he wasn’t actually sleeping. His mind couldn’t stop meditating on his problems- that he later developed high blood pressure and this almost cost him his life.
One day, it dawned on him that thinking won’t solve his problems and he started to seek ways he can actually turn his setback into a major comeback. He realized there is something worthwhile and productive he could do instead of staying around mourning. But he didn’t know what to do, but then he was willing to learn and do anything that could make him much better than he was before.
Later, he met with a young man who later became his mentor. He told him “Your setback is one of the best things that can happen to you right now” He was shocked. It was like he was mocking and making his matter worse. Then he went on to say “At this point in your life, you should realize your potential, you should know more about yourself. Now is the time to discover your God given talent which you never used.” He then handed him a book- it’s was a book on personal growth and development. This book simply changed my friends life; he’s life took a new form and direction. He found purpose.
To cut the long story short, this piece of wonderful writings changed his whole life. He developed as a person, since then he has been a person who looks out for every opportunity to learn and grow. He’s more knowledgeable and skillful than he used to be. And of course he got to like himself more; His self-esteem boosted. “Thanks to the hard time of his life” he said.
I believe we all go through trying and difficult situations in life. There are times when it seem our world is ripping apart right before our eyes. But there’s always something special about moments like this. I found out there is always an opportunity to get better and it’s a moment when you get to meet a new person that you are. For example, my friend didn’t know he was that resilient, serious minded, hardworking and talented. It was during his hard time he got to meet his new self. It is the same for you. It’s in ugly situations like this that you truly know what you’re capable of. Funny enough, there are many positive attributes inside of you that you will never realize until there’s a setback or massive failure.
Like Brian Tracy said, when God wants to send you a gift he wraps it up in a problem, the bigger the problem, the bigger the gift God is sending you.
