Centralia is an abandoned town in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. In that sense Centralia, Pennsylvania is like any other town. People lived there and raised families. They attended the local churches and went to nearby schools. Until  the coal veins under the city caught fire. This fire has been burning continuously right beneath the ground since 1962. Today the entire city lies abandoned. Centralia is an increasingly popular place to visit, especially with those looking for something not found in a tourist guide!

2. Akodessewa Voodoo Market, Togo:
Togo’s capital city is the showplace of the biggest Voodoo(juju) market in the world. The Akodessewa voodoo market is the place where you can find anything from monkey heads and human heads to native doctors who are capable of making rituals for healing and other needs.

3. The Door to Hell, Turkmenistan:
The Door to Hell was originally a gas field set alight by Soviet scientists that has been burning continuously for over 40 years. The crater, which is 69 meters wide and 30 meters deep, is located in a natural gas field in Ahal Province in Turkmenistan, which has the sixth largest reserves in the world.

4. Hanging coffins of Sagada, Philippines

The indigenous people of Sagada follow an incomparable burial rights.Instead of being placed into the ground, the coffins are hung either inside the caves or on the face of the cliffs, near the hanging coffins of their ancestors. The Sagada people have been practicing such burials for over 2000 years, and some of the coffins are well over a century old. Eventually the coffins deteriorate and fall from their precarious positions.

5. Island of the Dolls in Mexico

Long time ago, the caretaker of this island found a girl that drowned in the surrounding waters. Shortly after, a doll was floating in the water and he hung it in the trees as a sign of respect to the girl’s spirit. For 50 years, until he drowned in the same water, he continued hanging dolls and now it’s a tourist attraction that visitor’s keep adding to.
